“Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is threads, hundreds of tiny threads, which sew people together through the years.“

About the Piece: As my husband and I approach 20 years of marriage, this quote about the connective threads that weave a life together really hit home with me. If you read the center column from top to bottom, you’ll find a coded message: I (block at the top, echoed by the bird’s ‘eye’ behind the block) love (the heart-shaped red coral) and you (the U shaped basket holding a whole quail eggshell). I thought about the tension between the “I” at the center, and the “ours” on the spine of the red book in the upper right space. I thought about how each person has their own book, their own story, and how they are also weaving a shared story from the fragments of their shared experiences (represented by the fragments of text on the outer edges of the box). And I thought about how each person in a marriage is reaching for their own destiny, even while they tend together their offspring (represented by the egg in the basket.) And sometimes it is just as simple as two shells, side by side, a pair for life.

Materials: Two paper-mache hands; white thread; miniature basket; quail egg; heart-ish shaped red coral; sticks; woven ball; poetry fragments; wooden egg cup; two white shells; block with letter I; two small books; images from vintage nature encyclopedia; crystals; assorted other papers; braided rope and gold nails.
