This sweet, wistful little piece speaks to the moments when parts of you are ready to escape the safe, secret egg-world and find their way into flight.
About this Piece: On either side of the dreamy central image of the girl stand a pair of sturdy brown boots, each full of "be free" flags. These symbolize to me the feeling of standing firm and being grounded in trust as you allow fledgling new parts of you (or new projects?) to find their own way in the world. This tension between invisible/safe and visible/free is an area of continual fascination for me, and for many the other creatives I know. (Particularly the introverts among us!)
Size: 8.5" H X 8" W X 2" D
Materials: The box is reclaimed from a Melissa and Doug toy. It contains: quail eggs, gauze, tissue paper, wrapping paper, feather, doll boots, altered bamboo drink skewers and paper straws from my parents' 50th anniversary party, hand-stitched "be free" flags, maps, found wooden interior box, beads, earring (the birds on a wire circle is the survivor of a beloved set of earrings - the other one tragically did not survive a journey through the washing machine), metal circle which fell off of an old glider-rocker. Also acrylic paints and bronze paint stick.
Stand or hang: At 2" deep, The Hatching is sturdy enough to stand on a shelf, or it can be hung on the wall.
Like all my assemblages, The Hatching is a one-of-a-kind and will never be duplicated. When it is gone, it's gone!
