This sweet piece started with the dear tin cookie cutter letters that a friend dropped off at my work station.
About this Piece: The alphabet cookie cutter set only included one of each letter, so I started by exploring short words to see whether one would spark a theme. The evocative word “wing” became an opportunity to explore four different versions of the idea of wings - from the full eagle wings of the “w” to the single real feather held in the hand near the “I” to the winged cherub of the “N” to the single large metal wing of the “G.” Each letter is mounted on a blue square cut from an old book cover. I love the texture of those old bindings! Around the outer edges of the box, I found images of wings and poems that referenced wings and flight and created circles to echo the circular “nest” of three bead “eggs” at the center.
Materials: found box; mini cookie-cutter letters; faux wooden hand; back cover of vintage book; feather; brass wing; plastic wings from toy bird; cupid from cast-off decoration; beads; brass “bowl” of unknown origins; assorted papers; resin; puffy paint; acrylic paints.
